Horses need to run, part 3

In the past few days, I’ve been talking a lot about how horses need to run.

But keep in mind that some venues are going to work better than others for your particular expression of the horse.

For example, take the Ed Zitron email newsletter Matthew Rawle describes in this clip from the podcast (see below). One of the newsletter issues, one alone, came in at 14,500 words.

To compare, 750 words is considered to be a decent-sized blog post. 14,500 words is long. Almost like a book.

So there are some venues which are not going to work well for your expression of your horse. LinkedIn, for example, limits posts to, I think, 3,000 characters, which is about 250 words. You’ll have more than 10 times that in a typical 20-minute presentation.

If the format doesn’t fit your space needs, don’t bring out your horse. Your horse is a thoroughbred. You can’t let it out of the barn and then ask it to show off while running in tiny little circles. You’re just going to piss off and frustrate everyone. Everyone’s going to hate you, including the horse.
